Moving Forward for Women's Liberation

THE SHULAMITH FIRESTONE WOMEN'S LIBERATION
MEMORIAL CONFERENCE ON WHAT IS TO BE DONE

To mark a year since the death of Redstockings co-founder Shulamith Firestone and reawaken the kind of fresh, radical questioning and action she inspired, Redstockings called for a memorial conference in her name in the fall of 2013 on "What Is To Be Done?" The enthusiastic response demonstrated that women continue to be very interested in "big picture" questions about how and why women are oppressed and how the answers to these questions bear on liberation strategies. Eighty-six women gathered in New York City for the conference. They were women of color, white, young, old, and from across the US and Canada. You can listen to the full audio here and see some photos of the conference on our facebook page.

birth strike coverUPPING THE GAME: FROM WINNING THE STRIKE WEAPONS TO ORGANIZING THE STRIKE

In a new book released in 2019, "Birth Strike: The Hidden Fight over Women's Work," Jenny Brown, a new generation Redstocking, shows that women in the United States have been on strike individually and spontaneously. Now it's time to get organized in exercising our birthstrike weapon - among many others!!

This book is the product of a collaboration between National Women's Liberation and Redstockings. Jenny is not just the author but the lead organizer for National Women's Liberation, a mass action group that Redstockings co-founded with a long-time collaborator from the 1960s - Gainesville, Florida Women's Liberation.

Veteran 1960s radical feminists Ti-Grace Atkinson and Kathie Sarachild of Redstockings spoke on Radical Provocations, Feminist Futures & Feminist Pasts on March 26 and 27, 2013 at Arizona State in Phoenix, Arizona.

Kathie Sarachild's talk "Feminist Revolution: Toward a Science of Women's Freedom" can be seen, including the question and answer period, by clicking here. Unfortunately, the video of Ti-Grace Atkinson's talk had technical difficulties and we cannot provide it. Redstockings hopes to be soon making the written version available.

WOMEN AND THE DANISH NATIONAL HEALTH CARE SYSTEM

Reprint of Danish government articles on healthcare in Denmark and the history of the Danish Redstockings. Added comments by Redstockings of the U.S.A.
8 1/2 X 7 booklet, 28 pages.

From Redstockings' 1987 introduction to Women and the Danish National Healthcare System:
"As Denmark took ideas from the American Women's Liberation Movement, the United States now has to take ideas from Denmark and the many other countries that have national health care systems. We are in a crisis of astronomical health care costs and poor results in terms of a healthy nation of people ... A system of free quality health care for all ... will bring much needed relief, and for women in particular, a little more of a base, a springboard toward more and more independence, a greater social sharing of the costs of child [and all family care], without which the goal of fully equal relations with men cannot be finally achieved."

REDSTOCKINGS' FIRST ACTION FOR
NATIONAL HEALTH CARE IN THE U.S.
:
A consciousness-raising workshop at a conference for devising a national health care system, May 16, 1987, Chevy Chase, Md.

"Consciousness-raising has proved to be a powerful tool both for the learning of the 'organizers' and the learning of those whom they are organizing...it offers enormous promise of help in popularizing the national health care issue and more quickly winning this wonderful advance for the masses of people in the United States and this basic building block of women's liberation."
